Recently, I was talking to a new voice actor about her business. She had done all the research and knew about all the recommended ways to train and start booking work.
It wasn’t until the end of our conversation that she mentioned that her roommate worked at a radio station.
“What?!” I asked.
“I didn’t mention it because I didn’t think it was relevant,” she said.
She had gotten so invested in pursuing the traditional pathways of building a voiceover career that she hadn’t stopped to think about how she might be able to leverage her unique situation.
Which I completely understand.
Sometimes it’s hard to see those kinds of connections, especially when you’re doing your best to follow a generic path.
She could have missed out on some potential opportunities because she didn’t see the connection right away.
