Mastering Your Vocal Warmups Free Masterclass

Hi there
Welcome back to the Mastering Your Vocal Warm Up Masterclass teaser tips. Now there’s a tongue twister…
Speaking of tongue twisters, do you have some in your warm up? They’re brilliant for helping to tone and energise the response of your movable articulators (lips, tongue, soft palate) to help with vocal clarity and expression.
But, and here comes warm up tip two ninja style…, where do you put them in your warm up and what tongue twisters do you decide to do?!
Let’s talk about the where first
- You don’t wanna be banging in with a twister right out of the gate. You’ll end up frustrated, tongue tied and giving up. You’ll get a lot more out of your TTs (tongue twisters but I’m cool…) if you do some articulatory release stretches first. Sure no one just runs a marathon without doing some stretching first do they? I mean, I never run a marathon but I’ve heard it from other runners and it’s just the anatomy of muscles so it’s the same. Try popping this tongue stretch in before you do a tongue twister. It’ll be a game changer for your success rate.
And now onto the what
- There are a million tongue twisters out there, heck you only have to google ’tongue twisters’ and you’ll have enough to do you til the end of time. In order to pick the right ones for you, you need to notice which sounds it is that trip you up the most. For me, it’s my bilabial plosives (nerd alert) which is essentially the p, b sounds. They’re always a bit lazy in the morning and I end up having to re record bits with those sounds in. So I make sure I include tongue twisters that work on those sounds like black background brown background or pretty big potatoes. Next time you trip up over a word, combination of words or a cluster of sounds, write it down! You can then use that to inform your choices when it comes to tongue twisters.
Happy days. Time saving (which links to yesterday’s tip) as you’ll only be doing the tongue twisters you need to be doing.
