The Gatlingophone art sculpture/performance is designed and built by Alex. It is a mechanical ‘record player’ that looks like a civil war era gatling gun. Alex creates his own, one of a kind records to play on the gatlingophone. To do this, he uses audio clips taken from major news networks, editing them into a rapid-fire audio piece. Then using a vintage recording lathe, cuts the audio piece onto a lacquer master disc that is then played on the gatlingphone. This performance is his artistic response to the way in which our society is inundated with media messages from an ever-increasing number of delivery methods that can often begin to feel as though there is no escape, leaving us feeling emotionally exhausted and filled with fear. To Alex, it feels as though we are being pinned-down by a machine gun fire of media messages. After you’ve experience The Gatlingophone be sure to stay for AUDIO Tonight! in Bragg Auditorium.
