About

Biggy and JJ 1965It was 1967. I was 6 years old and sitting in my father’s lap at WNBC Radio in New York during his show, (His name was “Big Wilson”) and there it was, my first opportunity to read a tag for Campbell’s Soup. My dad asked if I wanted to read the line “Mmmm Good”. I said yes, and read the tag with excitement, a bit on the wry side, with a very believable smile, not sounding like I was reading it, and with that movie trailer feel, with sort of the attitude of a cross between Mr. Rogers and Rod Serling, as well as the over all read being a little dry. My dad looked at me and said, “Son…..that was just great!”…what a good read… it had it all… Fantastic… it was… how can I say?…

“Perfect!” Then he looked at me again with a broad proud smile and said…

“Let’s do one more.” I’ve been doing Voice-Overs ever since.

How I learned:

Big Wilson Night OwlMy father, Big Wilson, was a major voice over talent and on air radio personality at WNBC in New York in the 60’s and 70’s.  I spent my whole childhood listening and learning from him.  At age 18, I went to work doing production and voice at many radio stations and by the time I was 23, I became a full-time freelance voice actor and I have been doing it ever since.  Today, I have a home studio in Tennessee where I voice 90% of my work.

Founder of the “Read it and Reap” Voice Acting School

In Fort Lauderdale, FL in the early 1990’s.  8 week course taught in a recording studio covering acting, voice technique, copy analysis, demo recording, Union versus Non-Union, and business of voice acting.  Based on the teachings and experience of Connie Zimet and myself.

Big Wilson

Big Wilson (born Malcolm John Wilson, Jr.; October 3, 1924 – October 5, 1989) was an American radio personality.[1] He worked as a disc jockey at WNBC AM in New York City from the early 1960s until 1974 and moved to Miami in 1975 where he worked for WIOD and WCIX-TV.[2] He was one of the last two hosts of the NBC network program Monitor. Prior to moving to NYC, Wilson and his wife Jody lived in a riverfront home inRocky River, Ohio. He commuted to Cleveland where he was the leading radio personality for some years.[where?] Tim Conway and other well-known persons visited their home.

Big Wilson served as the announcer for the weekly television program, Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler. During the program’s opening sequence, Wilson’s voice was the one which was heard reading the following poem:

Some people hustle pool, Some people hustle cars, But have you ever heard about The man who hustles stars?

Big Wilson

After Big Wilson’s death in 1989, Star Hustler continued to use Wilson’s pre-recorded voice in the television program’s introduction as a “living memorial” to the man.[3] This ended in 1997 when the show was renamed Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer.
